Alternate Image Galleries: NextGen
No plugin, no matter how well coded, can satisfy everyone. Since this site is dedicated to more than just highlighting my own plugins, I like to point out some alternate image gallery possibilities other than my own Pixgallery plugin. The one I want to point people to today is Nextgen. It appears that the developer of this image gallery, much like me, has decided to work from the ground up and create a WordPress native plugin that’s flexible but user friendly.
Little Tips 2
File naming. We all do it differently on our own computers. With Windows and OS X we have a large amount of leeway in how we can name our own files on our own computers. This is normally not an issue. It becomes an issue though when we want to use some of those files on a website. This is especially true of image or video files, though it can affect anything from documents to archive files as well.
As opposed to how personal computers work, most servers are fairly strict in how a file must be named in order to have it work correctly as part of a web page. The strict naming of files for linux servers only allows for letters, numbers, underscores (_), dashes (-) and periods (.) to be a part of the name of a file. You also must name the file as a continuous string of characters without spaces, so “my image.gif” isn’t valid but “my_image.gif” or “myimage.gif” or “my-image.gif” are valid.
This issue is particularly important for usage of WordPress with my AWSOM Pixgallery plugin, since incorrect naming of the image files can lead to issues displaying the images. The plugin supports custom names, so once you upload your images you can input a caption/custom name in the admin menu in any way you wish for display purposes, just make sure you leave the actual file name as something that is acceptable on the server.
Weekly Update Releases: Archive and News Announcement plugins Updated
In what is seemingly turning into a weekly phenomenon, There are 2 updates to AWSOM plugins now available. AWSOM Drop Down Archive has been updated to version 1.1.1 and AWSOM News Announcement has been updated to version 1.2.3.
AWSOM Drop Down Archive has had 2 updates in this release. The first update is a new Admin Options area that allows the admin to set the width of the drop down archive box–this is a feature request from some people who’ve needed to adjust the size of the box to fit their theme. The second update is to fix an issue where the archive could show up in the wrong spot in some themes.
AWSOM News Announcement has one update in this release, which is the same fix as the Drop Down Archive, to make sure the News Announcement doesn’t show up in the wrong location.
You can get the new versions of both plugin from their product pages.
AWSOM News Announcement updated to 1.2.2
Some people have reported issues with the AWSOM News Announcement plugin and WordPress 2.2.1, a new version of the plugin is available to correct this issue. Download it from the News Announcement product page.
UPDATE:
To fix an existing error do the following:
Deactivate the old plugin. Delete the older plugin files from your server. move the new plugin files to the server. Activate the new version of the plugin.
If you are experiencing any problems please contact me through the contact form or by posting on the Harknell.com AWSOM support forums.
AWSOM Pixgallery plugin updated to version 4.4.2 SE
It’s been one heck of an update schedule the last few days here, but I have one more update to announce. AWSOM Pixgallery for WordPress has been updated to version 4.4.2 SE (Second Edition). The major addition to this version is Visual Editor support for image and gallery caption entry. You can turn the Visual Editor on or off through the Admin Options Pixgallery menu. You can download the new version from the AWSOM Pixgallery product page at awsom.org.
I’m calling this version 4.4.2 SE because my normal naming convention would be to call it 4.5.0, but that version is already in development and will be out in a few weeks–and I wanted to get this release out immediately. (technically I’d like to call this new version 4.4.1 SE, but most of the tracking sites require an actual update to the number for them to register the release as a new edition, so it’s 4.4.2 for that reason).
As you can see, I try to squeeze into my plugins as many requested features as I can, so keep hitting me with the feedback and feature requests.
